YRHS Archers Perform Well on World Stage

The Yorkton Regional High School Archery team recently participated in the National Archery in the Schools Program, 1st ever World Championships, which were held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The YRHS team were among 600 plus archers who participated at the event.  “The event was the first of its kind and open to all countries that are involved in the NASP program” says Head Coach Darren Wandy.  The YRHS sent a group of 12 shooters, and a group of four shooters from Melfort made the trip to the World event representing Canada.  “It was a real honour for the kids to represent Canada.  It will be something that the kids will remember for a very long time” says Wandy.

The YRHS team’s best finisher was Brayden Jarvis.  Jarvis’ score of 258 out of a possible 300 was good enough to finish tied for 5th place in his respected age class.  “Brayden was actually tied for 4th place until the final round.  He then slipped into 5th place and was tied with another archer. Because he was tied for 5th, to determine the placing the judges then look at the number of “10’s” each archer shot in their 6 rounds of shooting.  A young fellow from Kentucky shot one more “10” then Brayden, thus costing him the 5th place finish and out of the medal round, however still a great accomplishment” adds Wandy.

“Overall our shooters did really well. I was very pleased how the students did.  Our top high school shooting male was Andrew Hollinger finishing 19th out of 29.  Our top shooting female was Dina Lazurko finishing 8th out of 16.  “Dina also did an awesome job, and finished well.  Maybe some of her best shooting she has done the last three years in the program” states Wandy.

The Next Stage:

The archery team will now start to get ready for the next stage of the season.  The YRHS will have their home shoot in early spring, as well host the Saskatchewan NASP Provincial Championships.  “We were just told of the news of hosting the Provincial Tournament.  We are very excited about the event and look forward to it.”  The YRHS club is also looking at to a return trip to the Nationals held in Louisville, Kentucky.  “We are hoping that sometime down the road that other schools will start hosting their own home tournaments, and Canada hosting our own National Championships.  The only thing holding back the National event currently is a lack of programs starting in other provinces. However with the popularity of the program, more and more provinces are looking into the program.”
